Bulan Kemerdekaan tiba! Mei Ling membantu guru mengedarkan Jalur Gemilang kecil di dewan. Setiap murid, guru dan pekerja sekolah mendapat sehelai. Nilai: Keadilan
fairness = keadilan; national flag = Jalur Gemilang; Independence Month = Bulan Kemerdekaan
This unit is about being fair. It is Independence Month, and Mei Ling helps the teacher hand out small flags in the hall. Every pupil, teacher and school worker gets one; nobody is left out and nobody takes extra. That is fairness: treating everyone alike, not giving more to close friends or less to people you hardly know.
Example: she hands them out row by row, from the front to the back.
Watch out: school workers belong to the school too, so do not forget them when sharing things.

Apakah maksud adil?
Adil bermaksud tidak berat sebelah
Sama rata
barang dan tugas dibahagi sama banyak
Tidak berat sebelah
tidak pilih kasih kepada kawan baik
Dengar kedua-dua pihak
sebelum membuat keputusan
Usul periksa
tidak menuduh tanpa bukti
fair = adil; not one-sided = tidak berat sebelah; hear both sides = dengar kedua-dua pihak
Being fair is like this balance scale, level on both sides. At school, fairness has four habits: share things and jobs equally; do not favour close friends; listen to both sides before deciding; and do not blame anyone before checking the facts. Usul periksa means finding out properly first.
Example: when two pupils quarrel, the class monitor lets each one explain, then asks the teacher to help.
Watch out: deciding after hearing only one side can easily lead to blaming the wrong person.

Yang manakah perbuatan adil?
colour paper = kertas warna; the same amount = sama banyak
When sharing colour paper, giving every group the same amount lets everyone do the craft, and that is fair. Giving more to a close friend is favouritism, and the other groups will feel cheated; keeping the pretty sheets for yourself thinks only of you. A fair person shares with the idea that everyone deserves a portion.
Example: the teacher gives 30 sheets for 5 groups, so each group gets 6.
Watch out: if some are left over, ask the teacher what to do rather than quietly keeping them.
cleaning day = gotong-royong; take turns = bergilir-gilir; cut the queue = memotong barisan
This screen lists fair habits at school: the monitor shares cleaning jobs equally; everyone takes turns on the swing; we queue at the co-op and canteen without cutting in; we report wrongdoing truthfully even if the culprit is a close friend; and on Teachers' Day we thank every teacher, not just a favourite.
Example: Wong is a close friend, but when he runs in the corridor and bumps someone, the prefect records it as it happened.
Watch out: being fair to close friends is the hardest part, which is exactly why it matters.

Apakah yang patut Aiman lakukan?
Situasi
Aiman, ketua kelas, perlu membahagikan tugas gotong-royong kepada lapan orang murid.
class monitor = ketua kelas; share out jobs = membahagikan tugas
A fair monitor gives each pupil a job: some sweep, some wipe windows, some take out the rubbish. Pushing all the heavy work onto pupils he is not close to is favouritism, and letting his best friend sit idle is even less fair to the others. When everyone pitches in, the work finishes quickly and nobody complains.
Example: eight pupils, eight jobs, one job each, and nobody just stands and watches.
Watch out: being fair means everyone gets a share, with no favours for best friends and no picking on pupils you are not close to.

Adil mengeratkan hubungan
Kepentingan, akibat dan perasaan
Kepentingan
harmonious = harmoni; quarrel = bergaduh; satisfied = puas hati
Why be fair? When everyone is treated fairly, the class stays harmonious and calm, and nobody fights; a fair person also earns everyone's respect. When things are unfair, the pupils left out feel disappointed and uneasy, and quarrels may start. Being fair yourself brings happiness, pride and a clear conscience.
Example: as group leader, Hafiz shares the prize equally with every member, and everyone accepts it gladly.
Watch out: if you are treated unfairly, tell a teacher calmly instead of settling it with a fight.
way = cara; importance = kepentingan; result = akibat; feeling = perasaan
This screen sorts word cards into four groups. Sharing prizes equally is an action, so it is a way of being fair; a harmonious class is a benefit, so it shows why fairness matters; friends quarrelling is a bad result of unfairness; feeling satisfied and proud is an emotion. First decide whether a card names an action, a benefit, a bad result or a feeling.
Example: taking turns on the computer is also a way of being fair.
Watch out: quarrelling comes from unfairness, not from fairness, so do not mix them up.
Pemulihan
Susun ayat tentang adil
所以是 Ketua kelas(班长)+ membahagikan(分配)+ tugas(工作)+ sama rata(平均地)。
Guru memberi hadiah sama rata.
build a sentence = susun ayat; equally = sama rata
A Malay sentence usually runs: who (subject) + does what (verb) + to what + how. So it is Ketua kelas (the monitor) + membahagikan (shares out) + tugas (the jobs) + sama rata (equally). Read it aloud once it is in order; if it sounds natural, it is right.
Example: Guru memberi hadiah sama rata.
Watch out: the first word of a sentence starts with a capital letter, which is a clue that Ketua kelas goes first.

Adakah perbuatan Jason adil?
Situasi
Murid beratur di koperasi sekolah. Jason datang lambat lalu terus berdiri di hadapan.
school co-op = koperasi sekolah; cut the queue = memotong barisan; turn = giliran
First come, first served is the rule of a queue. Jason arrives late but pushes to the front, taking someone else's place, which is unfair to those who came early. Being in a hurry is no excuse, since everyone wants to be quick, and the price of the eraser has nothing to do with fairness. A fair person walks to the back and waits patiently.
Example: Kavitha sees someone cut in and says politely, Sila beratur di belakang, ya.
Watch out: if you truly have an urgent need, politely ask those in front and go ahead only if they agree.
Pengayaan
Apakah akibatnya?
Situasi
Ketua kelas hanya membenarkan kawan baiknya keluar ke tandas. Murid lain tidak dibenarkan.
one-sided = berat sebelah; disappointed = kecewa
Letting only his best friend go to the toilet while refusing everyone else is favouritism. The other pupils feel let down and resentful, complaints start, and the class loses its harmony. Nobody becomes happier, and the monitor is not respected more; he actually loses everyone's trust.
Example: Siti raises her hand to go to the toilet, is refused, and feels it is unjust.
Watch out: a monitor looks after the whole class for the teacher, so the rules apply to everyone, best friends included.
Penilaian
Apakah tindakan yang adil?
Situasi
Buku cerita di sudut bacaan koyak. Ravi kebetulan duduk berdekatan.
investigate = siasat; accuse = menuduh
The book is torn and Ravi happens to be sitting nearby, but that does not prove he did it. The fair thing is to ask and check first, or let the teacher look into it, before deciding. Telling everyone it was Ravi or scolding him in front of the class would hurt him badly, and his name would suffer if he were innocent. This is what usul periksa means.
Example: the teacher asks a few pupils and finds the book was already torn but nobody had reported it.
Watch out: without proof, do not say bad things about someone in a chat group or behind their back.

Bagaimanakah Kavitha membahagikan gula-gula?
Situasi
sweets = gula-gula; group member = ahli kumpulan
Twelve sweets shared among four people gives three each, the same for everyone, and that is fair. Kavitha taking six while the others get two is selfish, and giving her best friend more is favouritism. Before sharing, work it out so that everyone gets an equal portion.
Example: eight biscuits for four people means two each.
Watch out: if someone does not want sweets, agree together on what to do with them instead of simply taking them yourself.
Ringkasan
Syabas!
Bersikap adil kepada semua warga sekolah.
Bahagi sama rata, beri giliran, dengar kedua-dua pihak dan jangan menuduh tanpa usul periksa. Sekolah menjadi sejahtera.
