Unit 4
Berterima Kasih Amalan Mulia
Setiap hari ramai warga sekolah menolong kita: guru, rakan, pengawal keselamatan, pekerja kantin dan pekerja pembersihan. Kita membalas jasa mereka dengan ucapan terima kasih.
Nilai: Berterima kasih

gratitude = berterima kasih; thank you = terima kasih; school members = warga sekolah
This unit is about gratitude. Every day many school members look after us: teachers teach us, friends help us, guards watch the gate, canteen workers cook and cleaners tidy up. We repay them with a sincere thank you and with kind actions.
Example: at the gate in the morning, Daniel thanks the security guard who opens it for him.
Watch out: thanks are not only for teachers; everyone who helps us deserves them.
Konsep
Kepada siapa kita berterima kasih?
Ucapkan terima kasih dengan senyuman.
Pekerja pembersihan
"Terima kasih, mak cik. Kelas kami bersih."
Pengawal keselamatan
"Terima kasih kerana menjaga kami."
Guru
"Terima kasih, cikgu, kerana mengajar kami."
Rakan
"Terima kasih kerana meminjamkan pemadam."
Jawapan yang sopan: "Sama-sama."
cleaner = pekerja pembersihan; security guard = pengawal keselamatan; you are welcome = sama-sama
This screen shows sentences for thanking different school members. It is best to say what you are thankful for, such as thanking the cleaner because the class is clean, so the person knows you noticed the effort. When someone thanks us, we reply sama-sama.
Example: Mei Ling borrows Siti's eraser and says thank you; Siti answers sama-sama.
Watch out: look at the person and smile; do not mumble it while walking away.
Konsep · Soalan 1
security guard = pengawal keselamatan; shelter with an umbrella = memayungi; school gate = pintu pagar
On a rainy morning, Pak Samad the security guard walks Mei Ling from the car to the gate under his umbrella so she stays dry. How should Mei Ling respond to his help? Rushing him or walking off silently makes him feel ignored.
Example: Ravi drops his water bottle, a canteen worker picks it up, and he thanks her at once.
Watch out: even when you are in a hurry, a thank you takes only a second.
Pengukuhan
Cara berterima kasih
Kumpulan Wong menjadi johan pertandingan bercerita.
1Ucapkan terima kasih sambil senyum.
2Beri kad atau cenderamata penghargaan.
3Balas jasa dengan membantu semula.
champion = johan; coach teacher = guru pembimbing; token of appreciation = cenderamata penghargaan
Wong's group wins a storytelling contest, and at assembly he publicly thanks Cikgu Lim, their coach, and the friends who supported them. Besides words, gratitude can be shown by giving a handmade card or a small token, or by helping that person in return later.
Example: Aiman makes a bookmark that says thank you for the worker who fixed the class fan.
Watch out: when thanking on stage, say clearly whom you thank and why.
Pengukuhan
Mengapa penting? Apa perasaan kita?
Kepentingan
Hubungan menjadi erat
Kita disenangi rakan
Jasa orang lain dihargai
Kita disenangi rakan
Jasa orang lain dihargai
Perasaan
Saya berasa gembira
Orang itu berasa gembira dan bersemangat
Orang itu berasa gembira dan bersemangat
liked = disenangi; value someone's effort = hargai jasa; motivated = bersemangat
Why be grateful? A simple thank you brings us closer to school members, and friends enjoy being with us. People who help us know their hard work is noticed, so they feel motivated. Both the one who says thanks and the one who hears it feel happy.
Example: Kak Ros at the canteen says that because pupils thank her every day, she cooks with more energy.
Watch out: gratitude comes from the heart, not because a teacher makes us say it.
Pengukuhan · Soalan 2
Apakah tindakan yang betul?
Encik Raju, pekerja sekolah, datang membaiki kipas kelas yang rosak.
school worker = pekerja sekolah; repair = membaiki; complain = mengadu
The class fan is broken, and Encik Raju, a school worker, climbs a ladder to fix it. Everyone can study in a cool room again thanks to him. The best action is to thank him, not to complain that he came late or to act as if he is not there.
Example: after the lights are repaired, Nurul's whole class thanks Encik Raju together.
Watch out: not running around the ladder while he works is also a way to show care.
Pemulihan
Padankan warga sekolah dengan jasanya
clerk = kerani; gardener = tukang kebun; contribution = jasa
This screen pairs school members with what they do for us: canteen workers prepare food, the office clerk phones parents when a pupil is unwell, the guard watches the gate, the gardener cares for plants, and teachers teach us to read. Knowing their work tells us whom to thank.
Example: when Kavitha has a fever, Puan Aini at the office calls her mother.
Watch out: the clerk works in the office; cooking and cutting grass are other people's jobs.
Pemulihan
Bina ayat terima kasih
Terima kasih, cikgu, kerana membantu saya membaca.
because = kerana; prepare = menyediakan; form of address = panggilan
On this screen you build a full thank-you sentence for the canteen auntie. A good thank-you sentence has three parts: say thank you, address the person (mak cik), then give the reason with kerana. Tap the cards in that order.
Example: Terima kasih, cikgu, kerana membantu saya membaca.
Watch out: kerana introduces the reason, so it cannot open the sentence here.
Pengayaan · Soalan 3
Apakah tindakan yang betul?
Kavitha demam di kelas. Puan Aini, kerani sekolah, menelefon ibunya. Kini ibunya sudah tiba.
fever = demam; clerk = kerani; grumble = merungut
Kavitha has a fever in class, and Puan Aini, the school clerk, phones her mother. Her mother has arrived. What should Kavitha do before leaving? Even when unwell she can softly say thank you, so Puan Aini knows her help is remembered.
Example: Jason hurts himself on the field, the teacher on duty cleans the wound, and the next day he goes to the office to say thanks.
Watch out: the long wait is not Puan Aini's fault, so do not grumble at her.
Pengayaan · Soalan 4
never = tidak pernah; valued = dihargai; consequence = akibat
If we never say thank you when people help us, what happens? The helpers feel their effort does not matter, slowly they stop wanting to help, and relationships grow cold. Think of how you would feel helping someone who never responds.
Example: Wong lends his pencil to his deskmate every day, but his deskmate never says thanks, and Wong feels a little sad.
Watch out: choose what would really happen, not a pleasant-sounding result.
Penilaian · Soalan 5
Apakah yang patut Jason lakukan?
Pak Cik Halim memegang papan BERHENTI dan membantu Jason melintas jalan di hadapan sekolah.
cross the road = melintas jalan; stop = BERHENTI; safety = keselamatan
After school, Pak Cik Halim holds up the BERHENTI sign to stop the cars so that Jason can cross safely. He stands in the sun every day to protect pupils. After crossing, how should Jason respond to this care?
Example: every day after crossing, Siti turns and waves her thanks to the crossing guard.
Watch out: never play with the guard's sign; it is a tool that keeps everyone safe.
Penilaian · Soalan 6
Apakah balasan yang sopan?
Nurul berkata, "Terima kasih kerana menolong saya."
reply = balasan; you are welcome = sama-sama; polite = sopan
Earlier we learned how to say thank you; this question turns it around. When someone thanks us, how do we reply politely? The usual Malay answer is sama-sama, meaning you are welcome. The other two answers sound like asking for payment, which is rude.
Example: Ravi picks up Daniel's fallen book, Daniel thanks him, and Ravi smiles and says sama-sama.
Watch out: look at the person and use a gentle tone when you reply.
Ringkasan
